The House(s) that Rick Built

This page shows the Land.

The land we purchased is a pair of side by side lots of 20,000 square feet each. This creates a total of 40,000 square feet (0.9182 Acre)of land in a 200' x 200' shape. There is an additonal 9 feet from the front of the lot boundaries to the edge of the road.

Looking at the area on the second lot where the driveway for the workshop/apartment will be. Some hand clearing has already begun.

Beginning to cut the pad to move the container in.

To the right of the container/drive location. Note the hill (lava hump) on the left. This will have to be removed to make the area flat enough for the driveway...

Various views into the lots, local foliage includes Ohia trees, Hapuu Ferns, Yellow Ginger.

The first pile of packing gravel, it will make the pad to store the container.

Gravel has been spread, nearly ready for the container to arrive.
A number of delays slowed progress at this point, not the least of which was waiting for our preferred contractor for the excavation. Though it would have been possible to rent a D-9 Cat, Rick hasn't been on one in many years and didn't feel it would be the best option. Renting one with operator would have cost about 80- to 90% as much as the quote for the excavation, and as anyone that has had work done with one of these behemoths, they are far from petite and not known for precision excavation. As our goal was to save as much of the natura foliage as possible, we had little recourse than to wait for Nick to come available. Once his equipment and operator was on site, things moved on fairly rapidly, but the excavation still took over 4 1/2 weeks. Given the amound of time (and care) taken to get the excavation done correctly, the money was well spent.

Looking into the lot where the workshop/apartment will be. Most of the trees in the pad area are already down and cut into firewood.

Looking off to the right, through area that will mostly be left undistrurbed. The pink horizontal tapes define the exit of the circular driveway

A view near where the house will sit. anote large hapuu ferns and ohia trees, most of the ginger in this area has been cut down, but will return within 60 days if we don't excavate right away.

Looking toward the road where the exit of the circular driveway will be. The Hapuu ferns will be relocated. The trees with white tape on them are to stay as is.

Back right corner of the property. The pink and blue flags are hanging over the corner marker pipe.

Looking into the area that will be untouched during excavation. There is an area of about 90 x 115 wide at the left rear or the property will be left natural, in additon to an area of about 70 x 75 feet in the center of the circular driveway.
